Can I Still Have Property Maintenance Done During Lockdown?

It can be hard to keep up with the rules when it comes to lockdown, especially when they’re different in England, Wales and Scotland. As we serve commercial customers from West Wales to London and the South East, it’s definitely kept us on our toes. While there are restrictions in place, the good news is that property maintenance and repairs can still be done, as long as tradespeople follow Covid-19 safety guidance.

What does the government guidance say?

If you cannot do your work from home (which definitely covers property maintenance) you can go to work. However, anyone at high risk, who has Covid-19, who experiences the symptoms or lives with someone who has Covid-19, should self-isolate. Every business should have completed a Covid -19 Risk Assessment to make sure they have all the right safety procedures in place.

Outdoor work

Even if they’re outside in the fresh air, on a building site for example, workers still need to practice social distancing whenever possible and follow the safety guidelines, including wearing masks where mandated or necessary and regularly washing hands.

Site managers and everyone working on site need to co-operate to maintain as safe a work environment as possible. If you manage a worksite, providing clear signage and adequate facilities is an important part of keeping staff and visitors safe. Equally, it’s vital that workers familiarise themselves with the systems in place.

Some workplaces may also be staggering start times to help reduce the number of people on site to make social distancing easier. If you will be working in a new outdoor environment, it’s a good idea to check what protections and regulations are in place before you turn up for work.

Indoor work

This is something that concerns more people than outdoor working, for obvious reasons. However, following the guidance on indoor working can help reduce Coronavirus risks, whether that’s in someone’s home or a commercial office space, for example.

Abiding by the 2m social distancing rule is the ideal, but where this is impractical, workers and building managers can take further steps to mitigate risk. This includes wearing masks or other PPE, asking tenants to vacate the area during maintenance, opening windows for ventilation, regular handwashing and disinfection of the work area, having tradespeople avoid face-to-face working or using screens or barriers, where practical.

Again, it’s all about co-operation and working within the UK safety guidelines to minimise risk as much as possible.
